Battlefield in the Gros Bessillon massif
Nella notte di venerdì, le fiamme si sono sviluppate nel massiccio del Gros Bessillon, sul confine tra Var e Aude, consumando circa 1 850 ettari di bosco. Il comandante Stéphane Nepper, portavoce dei vigili del fuoco del Var, ha confermato che il rogo non è ancora stato né domato né fissato. Nonostante le condizioni meteorologiche favorevoli della scorsa notte – una lieve discesa delle temperature e un aumento dell’umidità – le autorità prevedono il rischio di nuove riaccensioni con il ritorno di temperature più alte, umidità più bassa e venti più intensi.
Reopening of highway A61
Nel frattempo, la strada veloce A61, chiusa domenica a causa di un incendio vicinissimo a Carcasonne, è stata riaperta in entrambi i sensi. Il rogo, scaturito da un veicolo incendiato, aveva colpito 100 ettari di vegetazione, ma è stato rapidamente contenuto grazie a un massiccio intervento terrestre e aereo, con più di 280 pompieri e aerei cisterna impegnati nella lotta.

Il gigantesco incendio che ha devastato 42 000 ettari di territorio girondino nei primi undici giorni di Agosto è stato dichiarato “fissato” e non in evoluzione dalla prefettura domenica mattina. Tuttavia, le fiamme non sono ancora estinte e i vigili segnalano rare riaccensioni ai margini dei roghi ancora attivi.

Météo‑Francia ha elevato a livello “elevato” il rischio di incendi boschivi in ben 36 dipartimenti, dal Nord alla Corsica, includendo tutti i dipartimenti del Sud‑Est dove oggi il Var è in vigilia di canicola. L’avviso arancione indica condizioni di temperatura alta, umidità ridotta e venti potenzialmente pericolosi, elementi che alimentano il timore di nuove fiamme.

Gli esperti confermano che nove incendi su dieci in Francia hanno cause antropiche. Il bilancio di questi eventi sottolinea l’importanza di campagne di prevenzione e di una gestione più attenta del territorio forestale, soprattutto in periodi di forte siccità.

Mentre le autorità mantengono il monitoraggio costante sul Var e sui roghi circostanti, i vigili del fuoco continuano a ruotare le squadre fino a settembre, senza segnare alcuna rottura di capacità operativa. La popolazione di Correns è già al lavoro per valutare i danni alle abitazioni, mentre le strade chiave sono state riaperte, consentendo il ritorno a casa dei residenti. L’estate si preannuncia ancora critica, con il clima che spinge verso l’alto le temperature e le previsioni di venti più intensi, fattori che obbligano a una vigilanza permanente.

At seven in the morning, the reassuring voice of the fire commanders whispered to us that the night was “rather calm” and that the fire in Gros Bessillon was already “fixed”. “Nothing to fear, we have a cooler sky and humidity is up,” it seemed almost an invitation to have breakfast on the balcony, while the air was already tinged with smoke. As if nature had asked permission for its pyrotechnic show and we had already ordered the popcorn.
Then, in the afternoon episodes, at 11, the same voice now struggles to speak: “The fire is not yet controlled, more reignitions await us.” The thermometer rises, humidity falls, the wind blows and we watch the reality remote change channel from “under control” to “fire free”. It is no longer an update, it is a costume change: from fallible hero to real‑time apocalypse detector.
This straw of contradictory words is the media’s favorite recipe that, at every turn, turn the fire into an Oscar‑worthy drama. Where a minute ago we were overrunning the flames with “massive ground and aerial effort”, now they remind us that there is “no break in capacity” and that “rotations are ready until September”. What sense is there in talking about capacity when the fire burns faster than a policy statement?
And while authorities make the rounds of statements, the real flame is the one that burns in the woods: 1 850 hectares burned, 42 000 in Gironde, and nine out of ten fires of human origin. But the morality of “calm” nights reduces to a simple footnote: “more reignitions await us”. Perhaps it is time to stop selling packaged panic and actually start planting trees that do not explode at every temperature swing.
