The French government has decided to deploy a massive security apparatus for the mobilization day this Saturday, October 24. The move comes after serious episodes of violence and looting that shook the country last week. The goal declared by the authorities is to prevent new disturbances through a significant increase in the number of officers and a strategy based on rapid intervention.

Sébastien Lecornu confirmed to the National Assembly that the security doctrine will be completely revised. It will not just be about increasing the volume of units on the street, but about focusing on greater mobility to counter groups of protesters who are extremely fast and difficult to intercept. The plan includes the deployment of elite units that will bring an unprecedented striking force to the territory.

An arsenal of elite units and armored vehicles

Among the reinforcements announced by Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez are the GIGN of the gendarmerie, the BRI, and the RAID commando. In addition to specialized units, helicopters and water cannon vehicles will be deployed in the field to manage tension situations. A key element of the deployment will be the use of the Centaure, the massive 14.5-ton armored vehicles that the gendarmerie uses specifically when serious threats to public order are feared.

The goal is to move beyond the measures already in place last Saturday, switching to a more aggressive containment strategy. Soldiers from the Sentinelle force will also be employed for static surveillance tasks. Their presence will serve to free police and gendarmerie forces from territorial control missions, allowing them to concentrate exclusively on maintaining order during the protests.

Total mobilization and increased service presence

To ensure maximum coverage, authorities are also considering the deployment of trainee officers still in training. In parallel, work is being done to drastically increase the presence rate of officers on duty. While the presence was sixty percent last October 17, the goal for this weekend is to reach seventy-five percent of the total workforce.

The overall plan aims to deploy approximately eighty thousand people, a figure reminiscent of the large-scale deployments used during the Yellow Vest movement in 2018. Authorities are determined not to repeat the management errors of the previous Saturday, betting everything on operational readiness to respond immediately to any attempt to undermine public security in French cities.
