An Eiffel Tower employee confirms the removal of female staff during the visit of a Hindu religious group

An employee responsible for operating the elevators of the Eiffel Tower said she was forced to leave her post when the delegation of the Hindu group BAPS arrived. “In the morning the girls were asked to hide during the ascent. When the delegation went down by elevator, I was asked to step out and the elevator was operated by a man. I felt insulted,” the employee said, who sent a letter to the journalists of franceinfo.

The investigation also retrieved an internal communication from the general director of the company that manages the Tower, Patrick Branco‑Ruivo, which reads that, “in response to the requests made by the organizers of this particularly exceptional delegation, we have tried to adapt the device for managing direct contact points provided along the route.” The director, contacted for comments, gave no further clarification.

The BAPS group, met in Bussy‑Saint‑Georges in a new temple, denied having asked that women be excluded. It showed a photo taken on the second floor of the Tower where monks on a visit are visible, with some female tourists at a certain distance, but without any direct intervention. According to BAPS tradition, monks must not touch, speak to, or look at women, a restriction difficult to manage in a public elevator.

The case is not isolated. Down in India, in July 2024, an organizer had already requested the exclusion of women from an event with the same organization, stating “No women, no girls, no female volunteers.” Sociologist Christophe Jaffrelot of the CNRS recalled the ties between BAPS and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing the group as “a true instrument of power” that also has influence in France.

Facing the uproar, the City of Paris announced the launch of two investigations – one by the Tower’s administration and one by the city’s representatives – to clarify the facts and verify any possible violation of anti‑discrimination rules.

LG Smart TV: investigation reveals microphones active in standby, data collection and the statement “we own the screen, we own the television”

We would like to cite an important article of ours published yesterday by Newslinet to which we refer for all the details here. In short:

An investigation conducted by the US channel Gamers Nexus showed that LG smart TVs, based on the webOS operating system, perform various telemetry operations that raise serious privacy questions. The tests found that the built‑in microphones can remain active even when the display is in standby, recording ambient audio that is stored locally and then sent to the company’s servers as soon as the Internet connection is restored. The same researchers discovered that the television scans the local network, identifying other connected devices, power‑on and power‑off times and IP addresses. Some of the audio recordings were turned into text transcriptions, demonstrating the device’s ability to convert sound into text.

Meanwhile, LG Ad Solutions, the group’s advertising division, uses automatic content recognition (ACR) technology to segment viewers, measure audience and target advertising. The company stated that ACR data are anonymized and that voice recognition is an optional feature, activatable only on explicit user choice. However, the terms of use drafted for the Italian market provide that voices of family members, guests or children may be recorded and analyzed, placing the burden on the user to inform people present in the environment.

Faced with these results, the president of LG Ad Solutions, Serge Matta, stated in an interview that “we own the screen, we own the television,” emphasizing the strategic value of the screen as a data‑collection platform. LG disputed the investigation’s conclusions, claiming it does not systematically collect, record or store ambient conversations and that it uses voice recognition only when activated by the user.

Security experts have advised disconnecting the smart TV from the network, both via cable and Wi‑Fi, to block immediate data transmission, while acknowledging that disconnection does not necessarily prevent its acquisition or local storage. As an alternative, it was suggested to delegate OTT functions to external devices such as Apple TV or Chromecast, which can be managed with more restrictive privacy settings.

The case highlights how the transformation of traditional televisions into connected platforms makes the screen a hub for gathering and monetizing information, raising questions about advertising profiles, consent of third parties present, and cybersecurity vulnerabilities, including the potential presence of remote code execution flaws.

Macron announces over 50 contracts for the European space industry, worth about 20 billion euros

The President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron, took part on Wednesday in the first edition of the International Space Summit at the Grand Palais, where he presented the results of an important wave of financial commitments aimed at strengthening the European space sector. During his concluding round‑table, which included astronauts such as Thomas Pesquet, Macron announced that 51 economic commitments had been announced, with a total value of about 20 billion euros.

Of that amount, roughly a quarter concerns actual contracts and investments, while the remaining three quarters – about 15.7 billion euros – are linked to the granting of the future IRIS² satellite network, a European Commission project intended to provide all Member States with secure communications for crisis management.

The president emphasized the international scope of the event, with the participation of 90 countries and the signing of numerous projects with Germany and other partners, describing it as “a unique opportunity” to create a series of joint investments and partnerships for the benefit of the European space industry.

Among the most notable agreements, Amazon Leo signed with Arianespace a deal for six additional satellite launches, bringing the total planned launches to 24. David Cavaillolès, executive president of Arianespace, described these contracts as testimony to the confidence placed in the Ariane 6 vehicle and its reliability. Chris Weber, head of Amazon Leo, recalled the similar “bet” placed on Ariane 6 two years before its entry into service, which has already led to the placement in orbit of 100 satellites of the constellation.

Another important agreement was concluded between Arianespace and the Finnish group ICEYE, aimed at the future launch of the client’s Earth observation satellites. ICEYE, with over a thousand employees, already provides monitoring services to seven European states for defense, environmental, insurance and emergency management purposes. David Cavaillolès presented the collaboration as “a commitment to maintain sovereign access to space.”

President Macron concluded by reaffirming Europe’s desire to consolidate a space capability capable of meeting both commercial and institutional needs, while also ensuring the security of the continent’s critical infrastructure.

Rachel’s editorial – Space, money and vanity: Macron’s new circus

Macron has decided to turn the Grand Palais into an intergalactic bazaar, where 50 contracts are worth more than an entire constellation of political promises. But were we really waiting for the President to sell us a dream made of rockets and round figures, or is it just the usual magic of someone who discovered that gold is good for state accounts?

One wonders whether the “20 billion euros” is a real figure or simply the result of a rigged calculator by a press officer hypnotised by Starlink. Then there’s the bitter note: while Amazon LEO claims to be a “competitor” of Starlink, Bezos’s rockets explode and SpaceX is forced to stay silent. Perhaps the real competition is between press releases and the void they fill.

Arianespace, with its average of fewer than ten launches per year, struts, while Musk, who launches more than one‑hundred‑and‑thirty, is like comparing a scooter with a Falcon 9: both travel, but one does so without exploding. Yet, our President seems happy to celebrate the “success” with a parade of contracts signed faster than a tweet.

Finally, the grand finale: a quarter of the money in contracts, three quarters in a military communications network called IRIS². A nice combination of “there’s space for everyone” and “let’s keep our satellites close.” In practice, the goal is clear: more space for France, less space for competitors, and us viewers with popcorn asking whether the next launch will really happen or just be advertised.

Koan of the day

Monk: Master, why does the president celebrate a space summit when the most reliable rockets launch from his own continent and the others stay on the ground?

Master: Because celebrating is easier than taking off; glory stays high, while engines are held back by the ground of reality.

Monk: If the promise of “50 contracts” is just smoke, how can a nation find its path to the stars without a compass?

Master: The compass is doubt, and the true journey begins when one stops believing that a number written on paper has gravity.

And back to the news.

L’Oréal overtakes LVMH and becomes the largest listed company in Paris

The cosmetics group surpassed, in market capitalization, the luxury giant LVMH at the close of Wednesday 9 September. L’Oréal reached a valuation of €203.31 billion, just above LVMH’s €202.73 billion, with a margin of less than a billion euros between the two Paris Stock Exchange titans.

The reversal was aided by the drop in LVMH’s share value, which lost 36 % over the year. The decline was attributed to the effects of the Middle East conflict, which negatively impacted luxury goods demand, and to a still modest recovery of consumption in China, a crucial market for the group.

Conversely, L’Oréal has continued to post solid results since the start of the year. The “beauty stimulus”, an initiative launched last year, has brought numerous launches of innovative products, including the foundation “Skin Ink Infaillibile” and the upcoming men’s fragrance line under the Prada brand. Barclays analysts highlighted how the group is gaining market share, while HSBC reaffirmed its “hold” recommendation on the stock, albeit forecasting a more moderate second half.

L’Oréal’s recent performance, combined with its segment diversification strategy, has allowed it to consolidate a leading position in the French cosmetics market, tipping the market‑capitalization balance in its favor against LVMH, which remains a luxury giant but with more uncertain growth prospects.

Rachel’s Weather Editorial – When the sky is too busy changing

But do we really have to attribute every single raindrop to “climate change” or is it just our desire to give a dramatic meaning to a damp September day? Rhetorical questions, of course, but the weather cannot be an excuse to explain a train delay or a sore throat after a tense meeting.
Isn’t it more convenient to throw around “greenhouse effect” endlessly, instead of admitting that sometimes the weather is simply out of sync with our plans? Perhaps, in the end, the real change is our attitude towards the weather: learning to take the umbrella when the sun decides to take a break.

Koan of the day

A monk asked: “What is the true face of the time today?”
Zhaozhou replied: “The wind that caresses the leaves, but cannot capture their shadow.”
A monk asked: “Then where does the rain hide?”
Zhaozhou replied: “In the silence of the droplet that falls upon the eternal.”
A monk asked: “And the sunlight?”
Zhaozhou replied: “It is a heat illusion on a glass surface.”
A monk asked: “Then how should I live?”
Zhaozhou concluded: “Without asking the sky, but with eyes open.”
And that is today’s weather.
