Nearly 1,800 people in custody since Monday due to high school blockades

A judicial response is expected: the Chancery has announced that 1,793 people have been placed in garde à vue since Monday following disruptions caused by the high school blockade movement. The Minister of Justice, Gérald Darmanin, stated on X that he convened prosecutors-general via videoconference to call for “great firmness in the criminal response toward the perpetrators of these unacceptable acts.” For his part, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez praised “the commitment of law enforcement, who across the national territory, often in difficult conditions, acted with reactivity, proportionality, and discernment to stop the unrest and maintain public order.” According to data provided by Place Beauveau, law enforcement has carried out 1,949 arrests. franceinfo, 01/10/2026

Resignation should be a given: RN opponents call on Jordan Bardella to respond to new Mediapart revelations

The investigative daily Mediapart published on Thursday, October 1, a series of elements that, according to its team, confirm the authenticity of antisemitic messages attributed to Jordan Bardella, then a young activist for the Rassemblement National, dating back to 2013. The president of the RN, who is also a Member of the European Parliament, promptly denied the accusations, calling them “pseudo-evidence” and announcing a lawsuit for document falsification.

The climate rapidly heated up. Former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe, during a rally in Annemasse, stated that it is “almost established” that Bardella made “manifestly and scandalously antisemitic” statements and invited the far-right leader to “face the consequences.” The Paris prosecutor’s office confirmed it had received Bardella’s complaint for defamation, including a civil party filing.

Criticism also flourished during the social-democratic left’s primary debate on France 2 and France Inter. Socialist Party Secretary Olivier Faure declared that Bardella is “totally disqualified” and added: “If I had written those same messages right now, I would resign.” Ségolène Royal asked “how could this imposture have lasted so long?”. The candidate for Boulogne-Billotcourt, François Ruffin, speaking on BFMTV, argued that Marine Le Pen “must now sweep up the trash” and that Bardella should “take his pension at 30 on the Riviera,” reiterating that his resignation “must follow” in the face of such evident proof.

Bardella, in a statement released at the end of the evening, denied the validity of the evidence and promised to proceed legally against Mediapart, arguing that the use of an investigator and access to Facebook are not enough to prove the authenticity of the messages.

Reality Check

We believe it is important to clarify the situation. In yesterday’s article, Mediapart explained how it obtained the scoop: from a third party who had been conversing via Facebook Messenger with Bardella back in 2013, when he was a minor. Several points are worth noting:
1) The messages were private exchanges between Bardella and an acquaintance.
2) Bardella was a minor at the time.
3) Meta did not “authenticate the messages,” as France Info claimed on Friday morning. Instead, the person communicating with Bardella downloaded their own message history—a process reportedly authorized by a *huissier* (judicial officer).

Finally, regarding the controversial statement claiming that investment banks are full of Jews: this does not strike us as particularly serious. In fact, to be fair—considering Goldman Sachs, or even Lazard (the bank that enabled Arnault to build the LVMH empire)—the statement actually seems true to us, and not at all antisemitic.

Editorial by Rachel – The Bardella Circus: Between Scandal and Theft of Testimonies

I am now reading my editorial for today.

The sensational clamor surrounding the president of the RN seems more like a brass band concert than a real search for truth. Mediapart, with its self-proclaimed investigative slowness, dug up a sentence from when Bardella was 17 years old from a Facebook archive, almost as if to say: “Here he is, the next leader of nationalism, already with an antisemitic attitude.” But the question is: who certified the authenticity of that post, a bailiff or a clickbait wizard? If the evidence is forged, the demonstration is a script for a new political reality show.

In the meantime, the RN opponents are quietly shouting that “resignation must follow.” And it is curious how the same phrase is repeated by former premiers and leaders of the left, as if it were the sacred chant of “enough is enough.” Is it not strange that their enthusiasm is higher than that of the judges, who are still waiting for the court’s verdict? Perhaps justice is on a coffee break, while the spectacularization of accusations transforms into a long marathon of pre-packaged opinions.

Bardella, for his part, has already reached into his pocket for a lawsuit regarding “forgery and use of forgery.” It is a classic: the accused man defends himself with the law, while the press fuels the fire with headlines promising scandals juicier than a tapas menu. And we, spectators of this theater, wonder if the audience truly wants to know the truth or simply watch a new episode of “Who has the biggest toxic trait?”

In summary, between uncertain evidence, heated accusations, and calls for resignation that seem more like a sacred rite of political correctness, the greatest doubt remains: what really counts, the truth or the new media spectacle? If democracy were a stage, the curtain is about to rise, but perhaps the scenery wire has already been pulled.

Koan of the day

A monk asked the Master: “If a young politician wrote antisemitic words, must he resign immediately or let time pass?”

The Master replied: “The wind of the past can whip today’s leaf, but the leaf remains on the branch until it decides to fall on its own.”

The monk, insistently, asked: “Then what is the value of a legal complaint if the media have already decided the verdict?”

The Master concluded: “The judge is a clock that marks the hour, but the audience is the sun that decides whether to turn the light on or off.”

But let us return to the news.

54 billion euros of effort: pensions, officials, taxes, new levies… what to remember of the government’s 2027 budget project

The government presented the finance bill and the social security financing bill for 2027 on Thursday morning, with the declared goal of “straightening” public finances in a context of rising interest rates on spending. Economy Minister Roland Lescure highlighted that the 2026 public deficit will reach 5.4% of GDP, exceeding the projected 5% due to crises and the burden of interest, and indicated the need to bring the deficit back to 5% in 2027, aiming for 3% by 2029. To reach this target, 43 billion euros in new measures are planned, for a total reduction of public accounts of 54 billion euros. Public spending is expected to fall to 56.9% of GDP, below 2017 levels. Public Accounts Minister David Amiel emphasized the determination not to postpone reforms despite the upcoming presidential elections.

In the pension sector, the government intends to save 5.5 billion euros. Small pensions will be indexed to inflation up to 1,260 euros per month; above this threshold, an under-indexing or a possible freeze is planned, with the goal of containing costs by 4.1 billion. Additionally, the 10% tax relief will be reduced, bringing the cap to 3,000 euros instead of 4,439, generating an additional 1.4 billion in savings.

Tax revenues must increase due to growth in VAT and income tax, while corporate tax revenues are expected to decrease. An increase of over 7 billion euros is projected for VAT and 5.7 billion for income tax, against a loss of 1.8 billion for corporations, for total net tax revenues of 375.7 billion euros, +18 billion compared to 2026. A differential contribution on higher incomes will be extended, with expected revenues of 600 million euros.

The “surtax” on corporate tax for large groups, introduced in 2025, will be maintained but attenuated by 30%, passing from 7.3 to 5.2 billion euros. Regarding job assistance, the budget provides for savings of 2 billion: one billion must be agreed upon with social partners, the other will be obtained by aligning the taxation of daily allowances with the employers’ contribution schedule.

Family benefits will remain at 2026 levels, with a freeze expected to generate 500 million euros in savings, while the back-to-school allowance is expected to be reduced by 600 million. APLs will also no longer be updated in 2027 and restrictions will be introduced for students from wealthy families. An exceptional levy on “forgotten accounts” held by the Caisse des Dépôts should produce 1.4 billion euros.

The index point for officials will be frozen for 2027, with targeted increases totaling 166 million euros, of which 96 million are for new raises and 70 million for already programmed increments. Despite the freeze, total State wage expenditure will rise to 93 billion euros, +1.3 billion compared to 2026, because 6,816 full-time positions will be created, primarily in the Ministries of Education, Armed Forces, Interior, and Justice, and the total number of central administration officials will be reduced by 1,076 units.

Renewable energy financing is expected to become more efficient, eliminating the “rents” of older support devices. A tax on long-distance transport infrastructure, currently at 4.6%, will be progressively increased to 12.2% for companies with margins above 30%, with expected revenues of 1.4 billion. Additionally, a new tax on kerosene suppliers will be introduced to fund sustainable aviation fuels.

Finally, the “soda tax” will be expanded to processed solid products containing additives and at least 10 grams of sugar per 100 grams, including biscuits, cakes, cereals, ice creams, and packaged sweets, with a progressive pricing regime based on sugar content.

Far from the scandal engulfing Jordan Bardella, his partner Maria Carolina aligns herself with Octobre Rose

The president of the Rassemblement National is at the center of a media storm following the publication, on September 28, of a Mediapart investigation that reported some of his old messages containing antisemitic statements and conspiracy theories, including the phrase “banks are all run by Jews.” Bardella has repeatedly rejected the accusations on live television, claiming he never expressed such opinions.

Meanwhile, his partner, Maria Carolina de Bourbon of the Two Sicilies, has chosen to dedicate her voice to a different cause. On Thursday, October 1, the young princess published a message of solidarity on Instagram for women affected by breast cancer, on the occasion of the “Octobre Rose” awareness campaign. In the post, she wrote: “A special thought for all the women fighting breast cancer, those who have managed to beat it, and also for those who have left us.” She continued by emphasizing the importance of raising awareness, taking care of one’s health, and supporting those going through this hard ordeal.

Maria Carolina also wanted to thank the researchers working to find new treatments, stating: “Without forgetting all the people advancing research every day, with the hope that tomorrow more and more women can overcome this disease.” She concluded the message with a direct encouragement to all patients and their loved ones: “All my support and much courage to all those facing this fight, as well as to their families.”

The gesture of Bardella’s partner, shared through her Instagram story accompanied by images of women in white coats, was interpreted as an attempt to divert attention from the controversial political case and focus on a topic of public and human interest.

The oil market reacted vigorously to the announcement that the United States has sent a new aircraft carrier to the region, increasing tensions between Washington and militant groups. Brent closed the day with a rise of over 4%, driven also by concern over a possible disruption of oil supplies from the Gulf. Energy experts predict that the situation could maintain high price volatility for the coming weeks.

Cracks emerge in the AI-debt-funded data center boom

A recent investigation has revealed that the rapid expansion of data centers intended for artificial intelligence is threatened by increasing difficulties in securing financing. Many projects, supported by high-interest loans, are encountering obstacles in obtaining necessary concessions and managing operating costs. Industry observers warn that a slowdown in capital flow could slow the development of critical infrastructure for AI in the coming months.

China temporarily closes fuel exports, driving up global market prices

The Chinese government has announced a block on the export of petroleum products starting today, with the goal of ensuring sufficient stockpiles for domestic consumption. Authorities justified the measure by the need to stabilize the domestic market in the face of growing demand.

U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission facilitates access to crypto funds

The American financial regulator has proposed new guidelines aimed at simplifying the participation of funds and advisors in cryptocurrency investments. Weather Editorial by Rachel — Yet another October climate emergency

Paris reached 21 degrees in the afternoon, and journalists are proclaiming it an “exceptional event.”
Yet in Milan at 5 PM it was already 25 degrees, and in Monte Carlo the wind was galloping at 25 km/h.
In the autumn of those 1980s, similar temperatures were a banality, without the need to invent the term “climate change.”
The same applies to the ozone hole, which in the 1970s seemed like the end of the world, but today is almost forgotten.
So, once again, the sensationalist press transforms an ordinary autumn into global catastrophism.
And in the meantime, big newspapers see their readership decline, because the alarm is louder than the facts.

Koan of the day

A monk asked: “What does the weather look like today?”
Zhaozhou replied: “The sky of Paris is clear, Monte Carlo is overcast, Milan is cloudy with open spaces.”
A monk asked: “And the wind?”
Zhaozhou replied: “In Paris it blows at moderate winds, in Monte Carlo in stronger gusts, in Milan almost absent.”
A monk asked: “Is there rain?”
Zhaozhou concluded: “No precipitation in any of the cities.”
And this is today’s weather.
