An important turning point for the savings of French citizens is set to arrive in the coming months. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has officially announced that the maximum deposit limit for the famous Livret A will undergo a significant increase starting in February.

According to the government body, the current cap of 22,950 euros will be exceeded to reach a new threshold between 25,000 and 30,000 euros. The decision concerns not only the deposit capacity but also affects the profitability of the financial product.

Lecornu confirmed that along with the raising of the ceiling, there will also be an update to interest rates, which will undergo an increase. Technical details and exact figures will be provided by the Minister of Economy Roland Lescure in the coming weeks, following a final consultation with the banking system and the Caisse des dépôts.

New objectives for public financing

This political decision responds to the need to mobilize resources for the country’s major strategic projects. While historically the Livret A has been the main engine for financing social housing, today the government intends to diversify the use of these funds.

The priority objective is the support for new nuclear reactors and, above all, the financing of the climate change adaptation plan. The collected sums will indeed be destined for the protection of public infrastructure and the management of the energy transition in the construction sector.

The move comes at a time of close monitoring of domestic finances. Data from the Caisse des dépôts indicates that French citizens hold over 600 billion euros between the Livret A and LDDS accounts, a figure that remains stable despite recent market fluctuations.

Falling deposits, the government aims to stimulate collection

The government’s announcement seeks to reverse a recent trend that has seen savers withdraw more sums than they have deposited. In the month of September, in fact, the net balance of withdrawals recorded a deficit of over one and a half billion euros.

This dynamic is linked to the drop in remuneration rates that began at the start of the year. Despite a recent slight rise in the interest percentage in August, saver confidence has been tested by its own descent toward new minimums expected for the future.

The new plan to raise limits and returns aims precisely to stimulate liquidity collection once again, while simultaneously guaranteeing the State the resources necessary for major environmental adaptation works and for the continuity of the national energy system.
