Student mobilization: 32 % of French universities paralyzed by protests

The high school student protests, which began this morning in numerous cities, have caused the closure or interruption of activities in about one third of higher education institutions. The University of Lyon‑2 remained closed for the entire week, while other academic institutions have suspended classes for the whole day, raising fears of a massive student “drop‑out”. The president of France Universités warned that the continuity of the academic year is threatened if the protests continue.

Law enforcement forces intervened on several occasions, mainly to contain the courtyards of parent and teacher marches that accompanied the protesters. The Federation of Parents’ and Teachers’ Families (FCPE) denounced “disproportionate police interventions”, reporting the use of tear gas and batons against parents. The government, for its part, reiterated the duty to ensure public order, but also announced a dialogue with student representatives to find a peaceful solution to the dispute.

Airbus focuses on services to double revenue by 2045

The European aviation giant announced a strategy to strengthen its maintenance, refurbishment and logistics services, with the aim of doubling the turnover in this segment by 2045. The digitalization of processes, thanks to the use of predictive systems and real‑time data integration, should enable higher margins compared to traditional aircraft manufacturing. Industry analysts forecast that service revenue could reach $420 billion by the middle of the next decade, fueling Airbus’s growth even in an evolving aeronautical market.

Ukraine seeks more access to Starlink to defend itself from the conflict

The Ukrainian government has told Washington of the urgency to expand the use of the Starlink satellite system, deemed essential to maintain communications on the eastern front. Recent restrictions imposed by the provider have limited the troops’ ability to coordinate defensive operations and to guide drones against Russian attacks. Ukrainian authorities fear that further limitations could compromise national security and have requested an immediate review of usage policies.

U.S. inflation pushes diesel price to new highs

The United States consumer price index report showed an annual increase of 3.7 %, driven largely by a surge in fuel costs. Diesel prices recorded a record rise, raising concerns of further pressure on consumers and transportation companies. Economists at the International Monetary Fund warn that high inflation could persist until 2027 if measures to contain energy supply are not adopted.

Koan of the day

A monk asked the Master: “If diesel prices rise so much, is it American policy or the market that ignites the flame of inflation?”

The Master replied: “The market is the fire, policy is the wind; both feed the heat, but the true fire is the anxiety of the payer.”

The monk insisted: “And if inflation persists until 2027, how will man find peace on the road?”

The Master concluded: “The path will be satisfied only when the traveler stops counting cents and starts counting smiles; the irony is that the lightest fuel is the one of the heart.”

But let’s return to the news.

U.S. CPI data push bond yields higher

The latest U.S. inflation data showed consumer inflation higher than expected, pushing 10‑year Treasury yields above 5 %. Investors reacted by selling equities and moving capital to safer instruments, causing marked volatility in global equity markets. The French real estate market records 28 shops per thousand inhabitants

A recent study showed that in Paris there are 28 commercial establishments per thousand residents, with growth in restaurants and entertainment venues, while traditional shops continue to close. Experts attribute the phenomenon to changing consumption habits and increased demand for neighbourhood services. Local authorities are considering support measures to maintain a balance among the different types of commercial activities.
